From Ullapool follow the A835 north for 10 miles. At the junction signposted – ‘Achiltibuie and the Summer Isles’ turn left onto the single track road. Follow the single track road for 12 miles.
Driving south from Inchnadamph on the A837, take a right at Ledmore Junction onto the A835 continue for 8 miles. At the junction signposted – ‘Achiltibuie’ turn right onto the single track road. Follow the single track road for 12 miles.
Turn left at the T junction at Achnahaird Beach following the signs for ‘Achiltibuie’. Continue to Achiltibuie Village and drive all the way through, keeping the sea on your right. The hostel carpark is 2 miles past the Community Hall/Cafe/School hub. The car park is a grassy area immediately before a small bridge with a bank of trees and a tiny white cottage. You cannot see the hostel from the road. We have a big sign with Acheninver Hostel and a smaller brown sign pointing down the beach path which heads downhill towards the sea. Walk for 300m downhill, to the white-washed building you can see to the left of the track across the bridge. You can use one of the hostel wheelbarrows to bring your stuff down.
Use passing places correctly on the single track road, always wait on your side of the road, do not cross over to the wrong side. The normal rule is the car nearest to a passing place stops, and those coming downhill give way to cars going uphill.
Be alert for sheep and deer at any point on the road…they really don’t care about cars.
The track is NOT suitable for wheelchairs, high heels, wheeled luggage, or baby pushchairs. Get an overnight bag ready and only carry what you need. The track is rough and dark at night so plan your trip to arrive in daylight and bring suitable torches. It stays light until after 10pm from June to August.
